Clinton School District

Professional Development Guidelines

All teachers and administrators will be required to obtain 60 hours of in-service each school year. Of the 60 hours for teachers, 6 must be in technology, 2 in parental involvement, and remaining hours must be inclusive of training in Arkansas history (2 hours:  ONLY for those who teach it). Of the 60 hours for administrators, 6 must be in technology, 3 in parental involvement, and remaining hours must be inclusive of training in data disaggregation, instructional leadership, and fiscal management. Teachers and administrators may begin accumulating these hours June 1 and continue through May 31. There is no carryover of in-service hours.

You will be assigned to one of five ACSIP curriculum teams for work on the school improvement plans. This will allow for smaller group meetings to accomplish more productive work. Each member of the team will be assigned at least one action to be responsible for and to document implementation. All members are required to participate.

Additional trainings offered by the district are listed on the professional development calendar. Locations for these trainings are yet to be decided. Some are required for individual groups, so please check the calendar. Your technology training can not be anything you have had before and it must be above the basics. You will be required to use it in your classroom, as this will be part of your evaluation for the school year.

You may choose 12 hours of classroom preparation. Those 12 hours may include the following: grade level and/or vertical team planning; team work to analyze data; teamwork to develop AIP’s or IEP’s; developing formative assessments for learning; professional book studies; developing student-centered units tied to student learning expectations; developing intervention strategies to support remediation; developing or revising the ACSIP plan; or developing or revising curricula maps and/or pacing guides. The remaining hours must be approved professional development activities based on the improvement of student achievement on State criterion-referenced assessments and increasing student achievement and academic performance. It must produce teaching and administrative knowledge and skills designed to improve students’ academic performance. It may include conferences, workshops, institutes, individual learning, mentoring, peer coaching, study groups, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification, distance learning, internships, and approved college/university course work.

Upon ADE approval, a three-hour, graduate level college course may count as 15 hours of professional development, if the college credit is related to and enhances the teacher’s knowledge of the subject area in which the teacher is currently teaching or is part of the requirements for the teacher to obtain additional certification in a subject matter that has been designated by ADE as having critical shortage of teachers. No more than half of the required 60 hours of professional development time may be met through college credit.

All approved professional development activities shall relate to the following areas:  content (K-12); instructional strategies; assessment; advocacy/leadership; systemic change process; standards; frameworks, and curriculum alignment; supervision; mentoring/coaching/ educational technology; principles of learning/developmental stages; cognitive research; building a collaborative learning community; and parental involvement.
